There are a number of things that can go wrong with your Internet connection causing it to slow down. This can make getting tasks done online take much longer than expected. So, use this guide to find out some of the problems that may cause a slow Internet connection and what you can do to fix them.
Wireless Networks
If you are using a wireless network, such as Wi-Fi, to connect to the Internet, the speed of your connection can be affected by the location of your computer and the location of other wireless devices being near where your computer is located. Wireless devices use similar frequencies to wireless networks, which may cause interference, or even block your connection to the wireless network.
How close your computer is located to the wireless router or access point and any physical obstructions may also affect the speed of your connection to the Internet. So, if you think this may be a factor, try eliminating physical obstructions between your computer and its access point or move closer to the access point.
The Type of Internet Connection
One of the most important factors in determining how fast your Internet connection is by taking note of the type of connection you are using. Some of the most common Internet connection methods are cable, DSL and dial-up. Dial-up is the slowest, DSL is faster and cable is the fastest choice of the three.
Depending on your Internet provider, Fiber Optic Service, or FiOS, may also be used to connect to the Internet. FiOS can provide users with even higher speeds than DSL or cable connections. Visit the iiNet NBN plan page to learn more about their upcoming choices.
Computer Programs
A number of computer programs can greatly reduce your Internet connection speed. One of the most common causes of reduced performance is browser add-ons. These include search bars, multimedia add-ons and other programs that typically appear on the toolbar of your browser.
These can create a richer experience as you use the Internet, but they may also slow your Internet connection. If you believe add-ons might be the cause of your reduced Internet connection speed, try disabling them to see if it’s the problem and consider turning them off permanently if you find that it is.
Viruses and Spyware
Viruses and spyware can cause a slew of problems for your computer, including for your Internet connection speed. These are actually some of the most common causes of slower connection speeds.
Spyware may interfere with your computer’s browser and take over its Internet connection. Spyware also monitors your keystrokes and usage of the Internet, which can create additional delays.
You may even lose connectivity completely if the spyware or virus issues are serious enough. Viruses can also compromise your Internet performance, as they can multiply at incredible rates leaving little Internet connection bandwidth and power for other tasks.
If you think spyware or viruses might be the cause of your slower Internet connection, try to clean out any unwanted software using an anti-spyware and antivirus program.

Excellent Article Jane Sheeba!!! Thank you for Sharing…That was helpful! But putting that in action is quite difficult..Btw I love what you write! You are such an inspiration.
Hey Jane,
I have the same problem always at home! Internet is slow and mine isn’t hardware. It is because of my provider. Sadly in my country, we only have a few so there isn’t really competitions and choices to choose from.
Nonetheless, great for sharing and thanks for that!
Viruses, Spyware and Browser Hijackers can really make your internet speed very slow. I had a redirect virus script that was hard to remove which made my browsing speed exremely slow, I finally got it removed using ADWcleaner. Outdated network drivers can also make your internet connection slow. Thanks for the share Clara and Jane.
Hi, actually I had a problem with my connection now. It has high speed download with download manager, but to open pages, it’s very slow. I wonder, is it virus or there’s something wrong with my PC 🙁
You could do a full scan on your PC to check if there are any viruses. Mostly viruses slow down a computer (since you say the downloads are high speed). Or try cleaning up your browser cache, delete unwanted addons, extensions etc. and see how it goes.
